Keskusta valitsi maanantaina Katri Kulmunille seuraajan. Hänen tilalleen tulee eduskunnan puhemiehenä toiminut Matti Vanhanen.
Vanhaselle siirtyminen valtioneuvostoon ei ole ensimmäinen, sillä hän on istunut hallituksessa seitsemän vuoden ajan vuodesta 2003 vuoteen 2010.
Vanhasesta tuli puolustusministeri Anneli Jäätteenmäen johtamaan hallitukseen huhtikuussa 2003. Kesäkuussa hän siirtyi pääministeriksi Jäätteenmäen hallituksen jättäessä eronpyynnön.
Pääministerinä Vanhanen toimi aina kesäkuuhun 2010 saakka, jolloin Mari Kiviniemi astui pääministeriksi.
Kansanedustajaksi Matti Vanhanen pääsi ensimmäisen kerran vuonna 1991 ja oli tehtävässään aina vuoteen 2010 saakka, jolloin hän siirtyi Perheyritysten liiton toimitusjohtajaksi.
Siinä tehtävässä hän oli vuoteen 2014 saakka. Eduskuntaan Vanhanen nousi takaisin 2015 vaaleissa.
Vanhanen on ollut kahdesti Keskustan presidenttiehdokkaana. Vuoden 2006 vaaleissa hän sai vain 18,6 % kannatuksen eikä päässyt toiselle kierrokselle.
Seuraavan kerran hän oli ehdolla 2018 vaaleissa, mutta ei tullut silloinkaan valituksi.
